0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, n, numbers…

People usually get confused when studying numbers. Something which you should know about numbers is that when we use commas (vírgulas) they use points (pontos) and vice-versa. So, in Portuguese, we write $1.000,00 (one thousand dollars), as long as, in English, we have to invert the signs: $1,000.00.

How are numbers spoken?

What do numbers represent?

Numbers are often used on their own to show:
  • Price – It costs eight seventy-five ($8,75 – eight dollars seventy-five cents).
  • Time – We left at two twenty-five (2:25 – twenty minutes after 2 o’clock).
  • Age – She’s forty-six (46 years old).
  • Size – This shirt is a thirty-eight (size 38).
  • Temperature – The temperature was in the mid-thirties (around 35°).
  • The score in games – He won the first set six-three (by six games to three: 6-3).
  • Something marked with the stated numbers – She played two nines and an eight (cards marked with these numbers).
  • A set or group of the stated numbers – The teacher divided us into fours (groups of four).
